VETRINE is ready to reveal its latest digital tool in support of learning about sustainable fashion.

Please join us on Monday March 16 at 11am CET for a short presentation and live demo of the FashPass App.

The FashPass application:

Showcases sustainable fashion products designed by emerging creators across Europe.

Lets you explore each product and discover the story behind it — including design decisions, materials, and sustainability choices.

Includes a “Product Passport” profile for every item, presenting structured product information and key sustainability highlights in an accessible way (in the spirit of a DPP).

Features a personal diary for every product, capturing the journey from concept to final item and highlighting environmental, social, and financial aspects — including the designer’s reflections and decision-making process.

Features a public voting section, where users can support their favourite sustainable fashion designs.

Mark your calendars and connect to this zoom link on March 16 at 11am!

ECOSYSTEX is the European Community of Practice for a Sustainable Textile Ecosystem that unites more than 70 EU-funded member projects focusing on textile sustainability for efficient and stimulating exchange of information in the light of greater post-project life and future collaborations. Previously only for research and innovation projects, the network has just decided to expand its scope to include skills and education, and VETRINE is pleased to be amongst the first batch of 11 skills-related projects included in the network.

Fostering collaboration among EU-funded skills and education projects has become increasingly urgent to ensure coherent and impactful responses to the evolving needs of the textile, clothing, leather and footwear (TCLF) ecosystem. One key aim of ECOSYSTEX is to support EU-level objectives (such as the Pact for Skills, the Union of Skills, and related policy goals) through joint activities, greater visibility, and stronger coordination. Promoting skills development is essential as a driver of sustainability, circularity, digitalisation, and innovation within the TCLF sectors.

Within this larger network, VETRINE has the possibility to present results and confer with other projects through the many points of encounter provided by Ecosystex, including regular online “Insights series”, the annual conference – coming up in September 2025 in Gothenburg, Sweden – and through horizontal working groups.

As part of the European VETRINE project, partners ATP – Textile and Clothing Association of Portugal, Chimar (Greece) Pirintex (Bulgaria) and Texfor – Confederation of the Textile Industry (Spain), are mobilizing students and companies to participate in the VETRINE Entre-Fashion contest, which invites trainees of various ages to develop sustainable fashion or accessory items with the support of mentors from the industry.

“We want to ensure that Portugal has a strong and worthy presence in this initiative, reflecting our leadership in sustainable fashion,” says Ana Paula Dinis, Director General of ATP, the partner in charge of this part of the project.

The Entre-Fashion process is being launched during two weeks bridging April and May and will bring together graduates of VETRINE’s Capacity Building Programme “Green VETRINE”, VET institution teachers, and companies in the sector who are willing to guide the participants as mentors. The Entre-Fashion process is a straightforward one for the mentors in that it involves just one monthly feedback moment over eight months. Graduates have the opportunity to create a textile-based object or collection that put into practise what they learned in the course.

This initiative involves four European countries and will show how future designers can successfully combine creativity, sustainability, and market orientation. At the end of the process, there will be a public vote to select the best sustainable products coming out of this innovative program. The best items will be displayed at the project’s final conference, and three winners selected to present their work in person.

The VETRINE project will create a custom “capacity building programme” based on the information gathered through the “VETRINE Study”, which is one of the early deliverables of the project. The Study serves to obtain an accurate and up-to-date picture of the status of processes and actors involved in T&C in connection with their sustainability practices, as well as to gain insight into their direction towards “greener” practices and to use this up-to-date data and insight as the starting point from which to build up content for the capacity building programme. It also aims to raise awareness among stakeholders and to establish the flow of information between VET institutions, HEIs and labour market representatives leading to a more sustainable T&C sector.

The study contains the results of focus groups, a report on raw materials created by KAUNO Technologijos Universitetas (Lithuania), annalysis of Vocational Education and Training (VET) Educational Protocols carried out by partners AEG (Spain), “DIMITAR TALEV” (Bulgaria), CITEVE (Portugal) and EUROTRAINING (Greece), and an analysis of T&C national markets and prospect of applying sustainability concepts which is the result of research by ATP (Portugal), CEDECS-TCBL (France), CHIMAR (Greece), CENTEXBEL (Belgium), PIRINTEX (Bulgaria), TEXFOR (Spain).

The first face-to-face technical meeting for the VETRINE project was organised on the premises of CITEVE, the leading technical center in Portugal. It gathered nearly all partners of the Consortium for a full day and a half of meetings, with some attendees online. It is always a nice surprise to meet people in person after online sessions, allowing for deeper understanding of each other.

Naturally, CITEVE is worth a visit. Their labs, their technology and sustainability projects, and their proximity with the industry notably through the ATP Association, were greatly appreciated, together with the well-known reputation of Portuguese hospitality and food.

After a first ice-breaking session, the meetings primarily focused on the progress being made in the “work packages” that are active in this first phase of the project: the VETRINE study, the Capacity Building Program and Dissemination and Sustainability.

We had very interesting conversations around the upcoming VETRINE study (which will be published on this website in the next few days!). We found that VET learners asked to be trained in a range of specialized new skills related to “sustainability”, a very broad concept that refers certainly to fair, durable and environmentally friendly pillars. On their side, the VET and HEI institutions expressed their will to propose up-to-date curricula. Altogether, with the companies in the market, the final goal is to increase the appeal of the textile and clothing sector (T&C) sector to younger generations in order to speed up its transformation.

This goal will be contributed to through the Capacity Building Program output of this project will be based on the above Study, and will produce an online curriculum based on micro lessons, video tutorials, interactive quizzes etc. that will hold the interest and attention of a younger generation of students. Each country involved in the CBP will contribute learning materials on such varied themes as raw materials, innovative design, engineering, transparency and traceability, and entrepreneurship. Learning will end with practical training in local T&C SMEs, to allow for a hands-on, practice-based project that will benefit the enterprise and the learner. The project’s dissemination and sustainability elements will help raise awareness and engage stakeholders and fellow projects (especially other Erasmus Plus projects), both at the European and local levels.

To gain insight into what two of VETRINE target groups, namely VET and market linked companies, think about the apparel industry and its sustainability aspects as well as which interests they may have and what contents may suit them in a Capacity Building Programme, VETRINE has conducted 27 focus group sessions in four project countries: Bulgaria, Greece, Portugal and Spain. The deliverable produced from these sessions is not publicly available due to the sensitive material contained, however it represents a considerable achievement and first step towards what we’re calling the “Vetrine Study”.

The focus group participant profiles corresponded to VET learners enrolled in textile courses that generally fit into the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) levels 4 and 5. With regards to market-linked participants, a wide range of the T&C sector was represented with the presence of small production companies, family businesses, freelance designers, designers with their own brands, fabrics producers and designers, sewing workshops, synthetic yarn producers, associations of chemists and colorists, consultants, hat manufacturers, spinning companies, ribbons and elastic band manufacturers, innovation and research centres, textile businesses associations, and so on. From the data collected, qualitative insights were gained leading to interesting conclusions that will help us guide our work.

At this early stage we can anticipate that this part of our work confirmed some of the early hypotheses that guided the creation of this project, namely that there are gaps in VET education related in particular to sustainability, as well as in technical knowledge and business operational knowledge. In the T&C industry, where an influx of trained figures for the next generation will certainly be a plus, there were concerns about knowing and meeting new sustainability requirements or legislations, appropriate certifications, and related costs.

The publicly available VETRINE Study is something to look forward to for stakeholders involved in VET training or any stage of the T&C value chain. This study will be published in July 2024 and will represent a summary of both the focus group results and the extensiv research being carried out by project partners on market analysis, materials and their impacts, and VET institutional structure. This work that is well underway is the backbone of the VETRINE project and will guide us in the creation of the capacity building programme.
